How the paycheck calculation works
Your paycheck starts from gross pay — your hourly rate times hours worked, or your salary divided by the number of pay periods. From there, three things come out before the money reaches your account: pre-tax deductions, federal income tax, and FICA payroll taxes.

Federal income tax and FICA
Federal income tax is figured on your annual pay after the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) and any pre-tax deductions, using the progressive 10%–37% brackets. FICA adds Social Security at 6.2% on wages up to $184,500 and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages. The annual tax is then spread evenly across your paychecks.

They still leave your paycheck, but they reduce tax at your marginal rate, so a $200 pre-tax contribution costs less than $200 in take-home pay.
Why is my hourly wage worth less than I expected per year?
A common shortcut multiplies the hourly rate by 2,080 (40 hours × 52 weeks). That is gross pay before any tax. After federal income tax and FICA — and usually state tax — take-home pay is typically 20%–30% lower than the gross figure.
