How your age is calculated

Your age is the span of time between your date of birth and a later date — usually today. The natural way to state it is in years, months, and days: we count the whole years that have passed, then the whole months since your last birthday, then the leftover days. Because calendar months vary in length, the remaining days are measured against the actual month, so the result matches how you would say it out loud.

Years, months, days — and the bigger units

The same span can be expressed in a single unit, which is where the totals come in. One lifetime of, say, 34 years is also roughly 12,400 days, 1,775 weeks, or 298,000 hours. These totals are handy for milestones — your 10,000th day, your one-millionth minute — and the calculator works them all out at once from the exact number of days between the two dates.

Leap years and edge cases

A common worry is whether leap years throw the math off. They don't here: the calculator uses real calendar dates, so every February 29 between your birth date and the end date is counted automatically. If you were born on a leap day, your "years" still tick over each year, and the day totals stay accurate to the calendar.

A quick example

Someone born on 1 January 1990, measured on 9 June 2026, is 36 years, 5 months, and 8 days old. That's about 437 total months, roughly 13,308 days, around 1,901 weeks, and just over 319,000 hours of life so far.

Frequently asked questions

How is age calculated in years, months, and days?

We count whole years from your birth date to the chosen date, then the leftover whole months, then the remaining days. Because months have different lengths, the day count is measured against the actual length of each calendar month, the same way you would say someone is "34 years, 2 months, and 11 days" old.

Does this calculator account for leap years?

Yes. The calculation uses real calendar dates, so February 29 and the extra day in leap years are handled automatically. Your total-days figure reflects every leap day between the two dates.

Can I calculate age on a future or past date?

Yes. Change the "age at date" field to any date you like — a past birthday, a future milestone, or today. The calculator simply measures the span between the two dates you enter.

Why might my age differ from other calculators by a day?

Differences usually come from time zones or whether the end date is counted inclusively. This tool compares calendar dates only (no time of day) and counts the birth date as day zero, which matches how age is normally stated.
